Join us this evening in The Sugar Club (the former Irish Film Theatre)
for a fully-seated screening of Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait - a
film by video installation artists, Douglas Gordon & Philippe Pareno.
"The greatest film about football ever made" said The Observer. This
will be a fully-seated show with table-service throughout the
screening, you'll receive complementary gourmet popcorn upon arrival
and there are special wine & pizza offerings available.
The film is a documentary focused purely on Zidane during a game
versus Villarreal in 2005 and was filmed in real time using 17
synchronized cameras. Experience the Mogwai soundtrack to the film
through the venue's crisp Funktion 1 speakers. This movie is a
must-see for everyone interested in football, and anyone interested in
how cinema is capable of stillness and portraiture, how it can do
without the various conventions of fiction or documentary
As a prequel, we'll have an accompanying short, 'Refait'. This is a
remake of the last fifteen minutes of the 1982 World Cup semi-final
match between France and West Germany. Shot by Pied La Biche in
Villeurbanne, every aspect of the match was carefully reconstructed:
players, positions, gestures, intensity, drama. It consists in
shifting the traditional game area into the urban environment while
the original footage is shown side-by-side.
